Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden. It is the heart of Swedish commercial and cultural life and major center for international trade and communications. The city lies on the east coast of Sweden, between Lake Mälaren and the Baltic Sea.
The city is built on 14 islands that are connected by about 90 bridges. Careful city planning, and a magnificent natural setting among heavily wooded hills, has made Stockholm one of the world’s most beautiful cities. The contrasts of land and water and of old and new architecture add to its charm.
Old Town: The heart of Stockholm is Galma Stan (Old Town). This oldest section of the city is one of the best-preserved medieval city centers in Europe. It is site of the huge Royal Palace, which dates from the 1700’s. Sweden’s Parliament building stands near the palace, on its own island. The modern main businesses and shopping district lies north of Gamla Stan.
Djurgården: The Djurgården is the home of many historical buildings, monuments, museums, galleries, amusement parks, yacht harbors, and forests. The beautiful attractions and sightseeing it offers are Biological Museum, Djurgården Islands, Museum of Ethnography, Skansen Open-Air Museum, Skansen Zoo, The Green Grove, Thielska Gallery, Tobacco and Match Museum, Waldemarsudde, Wasa Museum, and Golden Peace Restaurant. This is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Stockholm where it attracts almost 5 million of visitors per year.
Norrmalm: The Norrmalm is the most central part of the city Stockholm in business and the largest commercial shopping district in Scandinavia. This is the part known as the City which features the following tourist attractions: Adolf Frederikskyrka, Bergius Botanic Garden, Kungsgatan, Strindberg Museum, and Berzelius Museum.
Östermalm District: The Östermalm District is one of the most populous districts in Stockholm, Sweden. It is a wealthy commercial and residential area. The Djurgården is located at Östermalm District.
