Secure Cloud Landing Zone

Umbrl

Umbrl

Umbrl is a UK-based insurtech startup on a mission to simplify home insurance. Founded with the belief that protecting your home should be straightforward and transparent, Umbrl is building a modern insurance platform that puts customers first. As an early-stage fintech company operating in a heavily regulated industry, Umbrl needed cloud infrastructure that met stringent security and compliance requirements from day one. MakeCloud deployed a secure cloud landing zone with AWS best practices baked in, giving Umbrl the confidence to build and launch their platform on a rock-solid foundation.

The Challenge

Umbrl is a UK-based home insurance startup on a mission to simplify how people protect their homes. With flexible, user-friendly policies tailored to individual lifestyles, Umbrl blends innovation and simplicity in a traditionally complex market.

Before going to market, Umbrl needed expert support to establish a secure, compliant, and scalable cloud foundation. As a regulated financial services provider, they had to meet strict requirements including GDPR, ISO 27001, and Cyber Essentials Plus compliance.

Umbrl had successfully built an MVP, but before launch, they needed a Cloud Landing Zone designed for regulatory compliance, security best practices aligned to the NIST Cybersecurity Framework, scalability and reproducibility, Infrastructure as Code to support rapid iteration, and developer-friendly defaults with minimal overhead.

As a startup in a regulated industry, they needed a trusted cloud partner to deliver a compliant setup — quickly and without compromise.

The Solution

MakeCloud delivered a fixed-scope engagement to design and implement a secure, scalable Cloud Landing Zone tailored to Umbrl's business and compliance needs.

Key deliverables included a multi-project cloud structure for dev, test, and production environments; identity federation and IAM aligned to the principle of least privilege; centralised logging, monitoring, and billing for visibility and control; secure networking with private VPCs, firewall rules, and NAT; and Terraform automation for reproducibility and rapid onboarding.

Our solution followed cloud best practices for regulated workloads, providing Umbrl with a production-ready cloud environment that meets both technical and compliance expectations.

The Results

The engagement delivered speed without compromising security or compliance. The solution was built to align with ISO 27001, NIST CSF, GDPR, and Cyber Essentials Plus.

Umbrl gained centralised cost tracking, access policies, and audit-ready logging, with full automation using Terraform for repeatable, scalable deployments. The flexible, modular Landing Zone was designed to grow with Umbrl as they scale.
